Oilogic + The Kids Better Sleep Project

It's National Sleep Awareness Month, and it couldn't come at a better time for us. We believe in living a mindful life, but lately I was noticing that we were less mindful in certain areas. Namely, in our sleeping habits. I always have a lot of projects going on, and it's the same for Honor. We both thrive on the go-go-go lifestyle and always like to be challenging ourselves to new things. I started to notice that we were both struggling to wind down at bed time.

When the days are long, the nights are sacred. I started trying to figure out ways to calm us naturally before we went to bed, so that we were actually getting a good night's rest. You see, there are very real negative side effects to your body will suffer through if you're not getting enough sleep. We don't often realize that getting enough sleep is actually as vital to your body as eating or drinking water.

I thought this National Sleep Awareness Month was the perfect time to share just a few facts about sleep you might not know.

1. Children and adolescents, release hormones while they sleep that promote their growth. If they are not getting enough sleep, their little bodies can not grow into the big, strong bodies they need to be. Not only to do these hormones build muscle mass, but they also repair cells and tissues. Sleep is vital to development.

2. Short-term sleep deprivation affects your cognitive abilities and emotional state. Long term, it can lower your body’s defenses, putting you at risk of developing chronic illness and autoimmune disorders. It affects your central nervous system, your immune system, your respiratory system, and even your digestive system.

3. If you're trying to lose weight, you better be getting those 'zzz's' in because sleep deprivation also affects your cardiovascular system, so you will gain weight if you’re chronically sleep deprived. Yikes. I'm not in the gym all of those hours to mess it up at bed time.

Needless to say, after learning about these sleep facts, I realized how important it was for us both to be getting the sleep we need to refresh out bodies and minds for our busy days. I knew I had to find a real solution, especially for Honor, because I didn't want her struggles to fall asleep to effect her growth long term.

I started becoming more strict on bedtime, and making the whole process a calming one. I realized that if I approached it in a tense, stressed out manner, she was going to feed off that energy. I also really love essential oils for myself whenever I'm feeling stressed or sick, but I hadn't tried using them with Honor. I found this brand Oilogic Essential Oils that creates essential oils that are diluted enough for kids, but just as effective in their benefits.

I decided it was worth a try, to get Honor on the right path to healthy sleep habits. I tried out their slumber and sleep products, which promote rest and relaxation. I've been so happy with the results! Not only has Honor being going to be so much earlier, and with less of a fight, but I've been able to accomplish so much more in a shorter amount of time after she's in bed. That ability to do things more efficiently has allowed me to have healthier sleep habits too, because I'm not up all hours of the night trying to accomplish things I should have been able to finish at a reasonable time.

I'm really so happy I tried out these products, and I know I'm not the only mama out there who has struggled with the bed time routine. I hope you'll find these products as helpful as I have!
